Breaking the Flea Life Cycle
Insecticides: By chemical means (neurotoxins), or by physical means (drowning, smothering, or dehydrating) adult fleas, larvae, and in some cases, eggs can be killed. No insecticide will effectively kill the pupae stage.
Pyrethrins - an extract from a type of chrysanthemum with natural insecticide properties, probably interrupting normal nerve function in the insect. Pyrethrins biodegrade rapidly when introduced into the environment, losing their effectiveness within 24 hours of application. Safe to use on both pets and surfaces; high concentrations should not be used on cats. Low toxicity level for pets and people.
Permethrins - A synthetic form of pyrethrin which retains effectiveness for up to 14 days, with a corresponding increase in toxicity to pets and people.
"Spot on" products - Available from veterinarians from a variety of manufacturers, spot on products usually contain both an insecticide and an insect growth regulator. Highly concentrated, these toxic products must be used carefully to avoid injuring the pet. ANIMAL CRACKERS PET SUPPLY DOES NOT CARRY THESE PRODUCTS.
